This major national event offers people free access to interesting buildings that are usually closed to the public or would normally charge an admission fee. Birmingham Tours will be participating in Heritage Open Days 2010. ALL walks listed are FREE OF CHARGE. Places must be reserved in advance due to limited availability. New for 2010 – the Big Brum Open Top Buz Sightseeing tour

 

For the first time the Big Brum Open Top Buz Sightseeing tour will be taking place in Heritage Open Days FREE OF CHARGE. The tour will last approximately 2 hours. Places must be reserved in advance due to limited availability – contact Birmingham Tours on 0121 427 2555 or 078051 15998.

The tour begins in the commercial heart of the city at Colmore Row and includes most of the major buildings of architectural interest including St Philip’s and St Chad’s Cathedrals, the Victoria Law Courts, the Town Hall, Victoria Square, the Council House, Art Gallery and Library. The route takes you to the unique Jewellery Quarter which really emphasises why Birmingham was known as the city of a thousand trades in Victorian times. Travelling along Broad Street – the Golden Mile looking at some of the more recent developments in the last 10 years such as the ICC, Symphony Hall and the National Indoor Arena we move into Edgbaston – home to the manufacturers of the city and the international cricket ground. Taking the Tolkien trail through Moseley we then enter the city from the East side so that we get the full panoramic view of St Martin’s Parish Church and the new state of the art Bullring shopping complex with the iconic building of Selfridges.

 

Big Brum Open Top Buz Sightseeing Tour

BIG BRUM BONANZA WALK

The walk starts at the mediaeval centre around St Martin’s Church and the Bullring including the latest `shop till you drop’ iconic building of Selfridges. Follow the time line to Victorian Birmingham and the 21st century of Queen Elizabeth II. New Street, Victoria Square, Centenary Square, the ICC, Symphony Hall, Brindley Place. The walk finishes at Gas Street Basin to look at the canal system which played a major role in the industrialisation of the city – learn about Birmingham’s unique past, architectural heritage, public art and the people who put Birmingham on the map.

 

MORE CANALS THAN VENICE WALKS

A guided tour around the Silver Cross – starting from Gas Street Basin the walk encompasses the Old Turn Junction, Oozel Street Loop and the flight of Farmer’s Bridge Locks on the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal. Find out how the Duke of Bridgewater influenced the development of the canal network. Where was Birmingham's first gas works? Can you find the site of Cadbury's first chocolate factory and on the site of which restaurant was the first recording of the Archers made in 1951?
